3. October Idea: Offer a gift edition of your latest book...
It's October, so it's getting too late to push for winter holiday sales. Rather than selling only through Amazon, why not buy some copies of your latest book and offer through your website, or a commerce site like Shopify, a gift-wrapped, autographed holiday edition of your latest book at a price that's both high enough to make it worth your while, and high enough to make it a gift the buyer will prize. 4. Consider hiring a literary publicist...
Literary publicist firms can charge a fortune (it isn't uncommon to pay as much as $500 to $2,000 for just a half-day [4-hours] of a publicist's time!). What does a publicist do during those four hours? Often they will brainstorm to plan a new marketing angle to push your book, something that is controversial or provocative for the media to take interest. This is a great approach to writing a press release because a marketing angle gives the book a reason for existing (raison d'être) other than just because it's a great read. Once the angle is determined, the publicist may draft a press release (many consider press releases still effective) and send it out through a wire service, as well as by email to individual contacts.

Before you hire us to help publicize you, or hire a another company or professional, here is some advice from Jane Friedman on what to look for in a publicist.
The media: keep in mind that selling a book to the media is all about "the angle" that will make them want to print the story. It rarely works to get the media's attention by the fact alone that the book is so good everyone must read it. Although the media can seem at times only motivated by controversy, gossip, and scandal, a good human interest story that aligns with a current event or popular trend can offer great exposure to a book and its author.
5. Social-butterflies don't finish books: How much social publicity should an author do?
What author doesn't struggle to find a balance between alone-time devoted to finishing the next book and social media publicity-time aimed at spreading the word to the public? And then, having found a balance, are there many authors who don't fret constantly about whether or not the balance allows enough time for writing? Or, is social promotion a good activity to get them out of their novelist-recluse lifestyle?
Unfortunately, there is no magical answer for this one. What do you value more, social network fame, or a prolific literary output? Social publicity does sell books, ,but how important is income from book sales at the moment? Is your identity that of a reclusive hermit author? Or are you a born-socialite whose creativity feeds off of interpersonal connections (if you can actually call social media "interpersonal")?
If writing full-time is your goal and you want to avoid social media marketing as much as possible, you can consider hiring someone to help you socialize for your books sake. If you Google social media publicity, you will find some good services that cost as low as $10-$20 per day for the duration of the the campaign. NEW YORK, Aug. 23, 2018 — The New York Public Library has joined forces with the independent advertising and creative agency, Mother in New York, to create “Insta Novels,” a revolutionary new program that will bring digital novels to Instagram, and make some of the world’s most classic pieces of literature more accessible to the masses.
The program, created by Mother in New York and developed in partnership with the New York Public Library, aims to make some of the greatest stories ever written more accessible to every New Yorker and Instagram user. The program launched on the Library’s Instagram account (@nypl) on August 22 with a newly digitized version of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The novel is illustrated by well-known designer Magoz (@magoz). Mother searched for designers with significant presence on Instagram in creating the program.
In the coming months, two other novels in the program will be released on the Library’s account: “The Yellow Wallpaper,” a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrated by Buck (@buck_design), and Metamorphosis, a novella by Franz Kafka illustrated by César Pelizer (@cesarpelizer).
Here’s how it works: the full book, short story, or novella is uploaded into Instagram “Stories,” complete with unique and engaging design elements. The Instagram-specific design includes stills and videos that mirror the unique layouts of the original works. The background is a warmer white that’s easy to read on screen, and the font is Georgia, a typeface that pays homage to the history of the written word in both print and digital (it was one of the first serif fonts ever designed for screen to make long form text more pleasing and legible).
Readers rest their thumbs on the screen to hold the page. They lift their thumbs to turn the page. The thumb holder also doubles as a flip book.: if a reader lets the book run they see an animation.
Using the “Highlights” feature, each novel is saved as a work of digital literature that readers can access at any time. This essentially turns “Highlights” into a digital bookshelf.
“Instagram unknowingly created the perfect bookshelf for this new kind of online novel. From the way you turn the pages, to where you rest your thumb while reading, the experience is already unmistakably like reading a paperback novel,” said Corinna Falusi, Partner and Chief Creative Officer, Mother in New York. “We have to promote the value of reading, especially with today’s threats to American system of education.”
“This project is directly in line with the Library’s mission to make the world’s knowledge accessible to all,” said Carrie Welch, The New York Public Library’s Chief of External Relations. “It’s appropriate that one of the first works we’re using is Metamorphosis, because in collaboration with Mother, we are completely transforming the way people look at this popular social media platform, and re-imagining the way people access the classics.”
